FOR THE INDIVIDUAL

ABC offers intensive courses in the Russian language for the individual student. The following information on this sheet outlines our program. This information includes: duration of the course, course objectives, materials and the role of the instructor.

Duration of the Course

The intensive individual Russian course consists of a minimum of *56 academic hours of individual instruction in the Russian language. The course currently consists of *8 academic hours of instruction for *7 consecutive days. The course may also be arranged for 2 week periods.

(* These numbers may be adjusted to meet client needs)

.

Course Objectives

ABC adheres to the Russian as a Foreign Language philosophy that intensive individual programs focus on the following areas: (1) speaking - (2) listening / comprehension - (3) reading - (4) writing - (5) pronunciation.

In intensive individual courses students are given one-on-one instruction and attention. The instructor administers an initial needs analysis with the individual student. The instructor will then use this information to help the student improve in all five areas prevously mentioned.

Special attention is given to unrehearsed or natural conversation, as well as fluency and correct mechanics in Russian. In order to fully meet the needs of the individual, ABC intensive course instructors utilize appropriate teaching methods & materials for intensive study.

Materials

The Russian instructor uses an appropriate Russian language text and accompanying materials (i.e., student book, workbook, cassettes) The coursebook takes the student in a structured fashion up to the next conversational level. In the case of higher level students the instructor develops a program according to student needs. Instructors also choose from many contemporary publishers when selecting appropriate materials, such as: newspapers, periodicals, essays, videos and other appropriate instructional material.

The Role of the Instruction

Functions of our intensive instructors include:

  1. Using their native speaking knowledge to teach correct grammar, pronunciation and contemporary language.
  2. Promoting pragmatic communication whenever possible.
  3. Creating a professional classroom atmosphere conclusive to intensive learning.
  4. Identifying student strengths and areas for improvement on a daily basis.
  5. Designing a syllabus for the course based on an initial needs analysis and adjusting it when necessary.

Follow-up classes

ABC believes that intensive courses are less effective without immediate follow-up classes, i.e. meeting 2 or 3 times a week for regular classes.
