BUSINESS ENGLISH COURSE

The Academy of International Business Collaboration (ABC) offers general and specific Business English courses.

Business English Course

The Business English Course consists of a minimum of 48 academic hours of instruction in the English language. The course may also be arranged for a 2 week intensive (60 hours). The course normally consists of 2 academic hours per day of classroom instruction, 2 times a week for 3 months (48 hours). At the end of the 3 month period, the course is analyzed for progress and may be extended if desired.

Course Objectives

The Business English Course is designed for intermediate / higher intermediate students of English who use their knowledge of the language in the workplace; in this context business English isn't a special language with a special grammar - it's simply English used in business situations. Words like fax, report, memorandum, orders, correspondence, customer, product, profit, proceeds, negotiate, expenditure, and so on are words that may be used in business by almost anyone having business contacts, regardless of their backgrounds. The Academy Business English Course is an English course designed for people working in a variety of fields or departments.

The objective of the course is to assist business people in improving their conversation and comprehension in business meetings and/or situations.

The Role of the Instructor

The ABC Business English instructor has the following roles:

1. Design a syllabus for the business course based on an initial needs analysis of the group, and adjust it when necessary.

2. Create a course structure and professional atmosphere conducive to progress.

3. Encourage and create communication between teacher and students, and student to student.

4. To teach correct pronunciation and contemporary business conversational skills of a native English speaking nature.

5. Identify student strengths and areas for improvement on a daily and weekly basis.

Special attention is also given to unrehearsed or natural conversation, as well as fluency practice and the correction of English language mechanics.

Materials Utilized

The ABC instructor selects one of the following English language texts* which include student book and cassettes:

New International Business English printed by Cambridge University Press.

(Textbook designed for promoting business communication within professional environments).

Longman Business Series Coursebooks printed by Longman Publishers.

(A series of business textbooks that place emphasis on specific business contexts).

* The instructor may request a different business text for more specific purposes (such as Banking & Finance English, Law English, etc).

These texts are designed for different levels of English language skill. The instructor may also utilize teaching materials from other contemporary publishers such as newspapers, periodicals, essays and videos.

International Business English

A Course in Communication Skills

A course in communication skills for people whose daily work requires that they speak English. It concentrates on English as a means of international communication, taking intermediate learners to upper-intermediate levels and developing relevant skills through a wide range of stimulating and realistic communicative activities.


This course for students at the pre-intermediate level who want to improve their English for business and professional purposes includes 16 main units, 4 review units, a word list with phonetic transcription and tapescripts for listening activities. The main units are topically based and focus on such themes as describing a company, welcoming visitors and dealing with problems.
